A waterproof bag is a piece of safety equipment for your phone and gear, so it's worth five minutes to check that it works — and a little care to keep it working. Here's how.

How to leak-test a dry bag

The paper-towel test

  1. Put a dry paper towel (or a sheet of kitchen paper) inside the bag.
  2. Roll the top at least three times and clip the buckle — see the method.
  3. Submerge the bag in a bath, sink or bucket for a few minutes, pressing it down. Move it around a little.
  4. Take it out, dry the outside and open it. If the paper is dry, the bag passes.

The air test (to find the leak)

If the paper towel is wet, find out where the water came in. Trap some air in the bag, roll the top and clip it, then squeeze gently while it's underwater. A stream of bubbles marks the leak: the closure, a seam or a pinhole.

Cleaning

  • After salt water: rinse inside and out with fresh water.
  • After mud or sand: wipe with a soft cloth; use mild soap if it's stubborn.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive scrubbing and washing machines — they can damage the coating.
  • Wipe the closure strip so the layers seal cleanly next time.

Drying and storing

  • Turn it inside out if you can and air dry it fully, out of direct sun, which can degrade the material over time.
  • Store it loosely rolled or hung, in a cool, dry place — not squeezed into a tight container.
  • Keep it away from sharp objects and rough surfaces.

What to inspect

  • Seams: look for lifting edges or cracks.
  • The closure strip and buckle: check for splits, warping or a buckle that doesn't lock.
  • D-rings and strap anchors: make sure they're firmly attached.
  • The base: look for scuffs wearing through the material.

Small holes can usually be patched with a waterproof repair patch or tape made for the purpose — check the maker's guidance. If a seam is failing, retire the bag from anything critical. New to roll-top bags? Start with our waterproof bag guide. Ready for a new one? Compare the Rihla 5L and 15L.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test if my dry bag is waterproof?

Put a dry paper towel inside, roll and clip the top, submerge the bag for a few minutes and check the paper afterwards. If it's dry, the bag passes.

Can I put a dry bag in the washing machine?

It's best not to. Rinse by hand with fresh water and mild soap; machine washing can damage coatings and seams.

How should I store a dry bag?

Fully dry, loosely rolled or hung, in a cool, dry place away from direct sun and sharp objects.
