Dry Bag vs Pack Liner vs Waterproof Backpack

Three ways to keep a pack's contents dry — and the combination most hikers end up using.

There are three common ways to keep what's inside your pack dry: a dry bag (or several), a pack liner, or a waterproof backpack. They solve the same problem in different ways, and each has a weak spot.

Dry bags

A roll-top dry bag is the most watertight option for individual items. Because the closure is folded, there's nothing to leak, and it survives being dropped in water. The downside is that each bag only protects what's inside it, so you need to decide what's worth bagging. See our complete waterproof bag guide.

Pack liners

A liner is a big, thin waterproof sack that sits inside your backpack. It protects the whole load and moves with the contents, so water getting through the pack's seams doesn't matter. The risk is user error: if the top isn't rolled down and tucked, water can run in like a funnel, and sharp items can puncture thin liners.

Waterproof backpacks

A properly waterproof backpack is attractive, but zips, seams and the back panel are still weak points, and the outside of the pack itself still soaks up weight if it isn't sealed. They're also the most expensive option.

What most hikers actually do

  • Day hikes in mild weather: a water-resistant pack with a small dry bag for phone, wallet and keys.
  • Rainy or multi-day trips: a pack liner for the main load plus a dry bag for sleeping gear and electronics.
  • Water crossings, boats and kayaks: dry bags — liners aren't built for submersion.

For Lebanese conditions — sudden mountain storms, coastal spray, river crossings — that combination covers almost everything. The Rihla 5L is the essentials bag; the 15L takes a spare layer or your sleeping clothes. For a hiking-specific plan, read how to keep your gear dry hiking in Lebanon.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pack liner better than a dry bag?

They do different jobs. A liner protects the whole pack; a dry bag protects specific items and handles dunks better. Many hikers use both.

Do I need a waterproof backpack if I have dry bags?

Usually not. A standard pack with dry bags or a liner is lighter, cheaper and just as dry for most trips.

Can a pack liner be submerged?

Liners aren't designed for submersion. For boats, kayaks or river crossings, use roll-top dry bags.
